Are the order and beauty of the universe the products of intelligent design? Or is it just the random design of some type of grand accident? For theists the answer is intelligent design. That our universe was set up to function in the was it does by design, not chance. This argument can be broken down into five steps.
1) The universe displays a staggering amount of intelligibility, both within the things we observe and in the way these things relate to others outside themselves. That is to say: the way they exist and co-exist display an intricately beautiful order and regularity that can fill even the most casual observer with wonder. It is the norm in nature for many different beings to work together to produce the same valuable end--for example, the organs in the body work together for our life and health.
2) Either this intelligible order is the product of chance or intelligent design.
3) Not chance. If one looks at a watch they know it has a watchmaker.
4) Therefore the universe is a product of intelligent design.
5) Design comes only from a mind, a designer.
It is of course the third point that is crucial. Ultimately, non-believers tell us, it is indeed by chance and not by any design that the universe we know exists the way it does. It just happens to have this order and the burden of proof is on believers to demonstrate why this could not be by chance alone. But this seems backwards. It is surely up to atheists to present a credible alternative to design and "chance" is simply not credible. Also, once again, theists claim intelligent design after weighing the evidence just presented. Yet atheists claim chance yet offer absolutely no evidence. If they claim chance is the best argument, then they have to show evidence for their claim. Otherwise they cannot even claim chance or they are committing the same mistake they would claim theist make. The best an atheist can say is that they have no idea, as they cannot objectively prove "chance" anymore than the theist can objectively prove "intelligent design." But after weighing the evidence of the world around us, it seems the more logical choice of the two options is intelligent design.
